The
morning dew sparkles on the beautifully kept grass of
Chelsea green. Mutterings from the Chelsea
fishmonger and Jago's the butchers can be heard as
they meticulously lay their counters. The smell of freshly
baked bread drifts from the French patisserie Maison Blanc
while the aroma of brewing coffee from the Pie Man wafts
through the air. Sitting on the green it is hard to believe
you are only two hundred yards from the hustle of the
Kings Road. Described by Clare Naylor in her novel ‘Catching
Alice’ as being in a ‘blissful time warp suited
to the era of Dick van Dyke with its film set shop fronts’.
Another description likens Chelsea Green to walking onto
the set of Gilbert & Sullivan London. The famous era
of the 1960’s where Twiggy and the Beatles were
regularly seen on the Kings Road browsing the multitude
of fashionable independent boutiques seem an age away.
Chelsea Green clings to something very special and rarely
seen these days in London. A fine array of successful
independent fashion outlets sit happily alongside fishmongers,
bakers and butchers. A small diversion from the hectic
Kings Road leads you into this wonderful picture book
community of residents and shoppers.
The much heralded chef Tom Aiken greets you from all directions
with his flag ship restaurant 'Tom Aiken’s' at the
head of Elystan Street, his new brassiere ‘Tom’s
Kitchen’ at the site of the old Blenhiem Public
House on Cale Street and the much anticipated fish and
chip restaurant, Tom's Place' soon to open at number 1
Cale Street. Additionally, Elystan Street houses two fine
Italian restaurants, Elistano and Pellicano.
If you are lucky enough to live in the area then you are
well served by your own cobblers, with Chelsea green shoe
repairs, a dry cleaners, with Lewis & Wayne and a
chemist, with the Astell
Pharmacy. A most welcome new comer to the Green, the
wine shop Haynes
Hanson & Clark, and the well established delicatessen
Finns attract shoppers from a far. Additionally, the famous
cake maker Jane Asher sits proudly on Cale Street. The
breathtaking Traditional Toys on Cale Street offers items
we all remember from our childhood, this needs to be seen
to be believed. With the famous L'Artisan Parfumeur, This
Works and Real Hair, all your pampering needs are taken
care of.
The Green offers ten unique and beautiful little boutiques.
Amaia, Sign of
the times, La Scala, Tops
and bottoms, Collette Dinnigan, Felt,
Aelia Laelia, Cath Kidston, Cathryn Grosvenor and Fifi
Wilson. Also a fine array of design outlets completes
this great mix: Neisha Crossland, Claremont, George Spencer
Designs, Robert Stephenson, Bruno Triplet, Paint and Paper
Library, Lucie Rydlova, Alec Drew picture frames and the
Talisman Gallery. We also house two estate agents, John
D Wood and Chestertons, and after all that shopping it
must be time to wet the whistle at the nice little bar
'Album' (formally Bodega).
We look forward to your visit.
